Go to SolutionWindows 7 installation hangs at Completing installation on Optiplex 380
Trying to do a fresh install of Windows 7 pro on a Optiplex 380. The installation on a new WD 500 sata hd hangs.
The pc was purchased from Dell and came with Win XP installed, and Win 7 DVD. The only change from the original configuration was to install a Radeon HD 4650 graphics card.
While it does have some flaky usb ports in the rear, it otherwise works perfectly fine in XP. Latest bios uopdated. Nothing other than usb keyboard, usb mouse, video cable dvi, and network cable attached.
A web search shows a wild range of suggestions - remove this, disable that, turn on AHCI in bios<

Went back and looked at the DVD that I was using, and was embarrassed to find that it was 4 years old, although in its original packaging, no SP1 etc. Before trying to update the SATA drivers, decided that I needed a more recent DVD and give it a try. Downloaded an iso from -
http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-59183.isoburned it << all very slow, and the used it for the installation. Everything went fine and I was able to install without any problems. Dell's website already had chipset, audio, and network drivers, and ATI had one for the older video card, so I had everything I needed for a complete installation.Philip_Yip

Great, glad to help, I always recommend using up to date installation media. Its a shame Microsoft haven't made a freely downloadable Windows 8.1 .iso for this purpose or a Windows 7 with a Service Pack 2 Update containing SATA drivers and USB 3.0 support.

You need to load SATA drivers as the new WD is likely advanced format. Try these:

Thanks for the links.
Looked at the DVD that I was using, and was embarrassed to see that it was 4 years old although in its sealed package. Of course no SP1 etc. Before trying to update the Sata drivers separately, decided to download a recent iso - http://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/14-windows-7-direct-download-links - and then try and install it. Went like a charm, with no problems whatsoever.
