I bought a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP about 3 months ago. As will become clear I'm not very computer literate!!
Initially when I used to click onto internet video links some of them would play and others wouldn't. The ones that wouldn't play the videos would open up in Windows Media Player and a dialogue box would say:-
" Windows media player cannot play this file. Connect to the internet or insert the removable media on what the file is located and then try to play the file again".
I just assumed that Windows Media Player was something that I would have to buy seperately but I have since been told that it is included as part of the Windows XP package. As mentioned earlier some files would open but these were through Quiktime Player. Stupidly I tried to download some updates from the Windows Media Player site but didn't know what I was doing with the end result being that no video files now play.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can sort this problem?
Try downloading VLC Media Player. It plays pretty much anything.

The problem that Windows Media Player is reporting is that its missing the codecs required to play the media file you are opening, in other words in cant decode the file.
Thanks for getting back. I've downloaded the software you suggested but when clicking onto video links Ion websites I'm still getting the same message from Windows Media Player. Any help would be appreciated.
Go to the web site your trying to open the file on and copy and paste the link here. I'll see if I can open it. If not i'll find something that will and let you know.
Sorry for sounding like a complete tool but I'm not sure how to do this. I tried to find it but still not sure how to do this. As stated in earlier post not very computer literate.
When you installed it there should have been an option to choose what file formats you wanted it to play. If you didnt select any, then try re-installing VLC media player, the alternative is to change the default player through windows itself, but that will take longer and is more complicated.
