\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM + REGISTRY_ERROR

I own a Dell Inspiron 8600, which came with Windows XP. Recently, when I tried to start my computer, I received the following message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair the following by starting Windows Setup using the original CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

Now, I tried going to Windows Setup with the required CD. However, more problems occured. I can either try to (i) reinstall Windows XP or (ii) Repair it. Personally, I'd rather do (i). However, when I try to do (i), I receive the following message after I press F8 to agree to whatever terms (required to install):

"Problem Description:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

REGISTRY_ERROR.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to enter Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

Technical Information:

***STOP: 0x00000051 (0x000000001, 0xE113EB68, 0x0034D000, 0x000001D6) "

Now, when I try to Repair Windows XP instead (ii), I receive the same message immediately after pressing 'r.' Because I am unable to even access an OS to begin with, I cannot do any of suggestions the Dell automated response gave me, namely:

"3. Use Safe Mode for General Stop Error Troubleshooting
4. TEMPORARILY disable or uninstall your anti-virus software.
5. Uninstall New Hardware and Roll Back New Drivers
6. Try the Last Known Good Configuration
7. Run CHKDSK from the XP Recovery Console
8. Perform a Windows XP System Restore
9. Run the Hardware Diagnostics on your Dell Resources CD "

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

    nn0701,

The procedure for correcting a corrupted registry are given here and/or here. Note that these procedures do not always work.

If you would rather reinstall XP as you indicated, follow the procedure here. If you do this it is important that you boot from the XP CD (to avoid the registry error message you report). To do this see this.

Thank you, but there's still a key problem.

Whenever I enter the Recovery Console Tool, and press "1" to use the C:\WINDOWS prompt, the following error message comes up:

    "Problem Description:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    REGISTRY_ERROR.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to enter Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

Therefore I can't use the recovery console without running into a dead end.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks again!
