Area-51m R1, brightness dimming issue, flickers
Hello everyone,
I'm reaching out for assistance with a problem concerning my (out of warranty 2 years ago) Area-51m R1 screen. My laptop is approximately a year old, and until this month, the screen has been working fine. However, recently I've encountered an issue where the screen randomly turns very dim while playing games (like Monster Hunter World). It's as if the brightness is set to 0 percent, even though the brightness level in settings remains unchanged (e.g., 80%). Trying to adjust the brightness slider doesn't have any effect, and strangely, moving the slider to 0 makes it slightly brighter (still very dim) on the right side of the screen. Restarting the laptop temporarily fixes the problem, but it reoccurs later.
Initially, I thought it might be related to my GPU drivers, so I reinstalled them, but the problem persisted. I then went ahead and did a complete Windows reinstall, but the issue still remains. Recently, it seems to have worsened, as now the screen only returns to the proper brightness for about 2 seconds during boot before dimming again.
I suspect that this might be a hardware problem with the screen, possibly related to the LCD's backlight. I checked forums for similar issues and found one similar case but didn't want to risk further opening my laptop beyond simple upgrades like RAM or SSDs until I have a better understanding of the problem. I did try connecting the laptop to an external display, and it worked without any issues, which suggests that the problem is specifically with the laptop's screen and not the drivers.
While I'm cautiously hopeful that it's not a severe issue, the small 2-second window of proper brightness during boot indicates that the LCD's backlight might not be completely dead or damaged. I wonder if it could be related to the connectors to the power source.

Hi all,
The screen inexplicably dims and retains the dimness even after a PC restart. I noticed that occasionally, closing and opening my laptop's flap briefly resets the dimness to the previous percentage, but it reverts back to dim after about 0.5 seconds. If I set the brightness to a low level (e.g., 30%) and then reopen the laptop flap, it does reset to 30%, but anything above 30% causes it to dim again. This situation is baffling! I desperately need help as I've invested a significant amount of money in this laptop. Adaptive brightness is disabled, and I've tried using both chargers. My drivers are up to date. Any help?

Thank you, but this doesn’t work as the problem always happen when the system temperature increases. The screen starts to jerk and flicker. However, when I connect the device to another screen, the problem disappears. I anticipate that the problem exists in the screen itself. Sometimes it doesn’t happen, and I may stay on that 2 days and then the problem appears again.
Note that the device changed the motherboard before. Now I am using the device without the battery since I need to buy another one.

@crimsom I'm not Karim, the person you replied to, and the issue on that monster hunter video is NOT the same issue that we're experiencing. It's not a flicker of the graphic display. It's a flicker of the BRIGHTNESS. BRIGHTNESS - as in the LIGHTING THAT PROVIDES THE SCREENS BRIGHTNESS. Sorry if that comes off as abrasive, but it just seems that wherever I turn, people don't seem to grasp the concept that it's not the graphics, or the image itself, that is flickering. It's literally the lighting on the monitor that is flickering. Nothing more, nothing less. So those videos and solutions are not helpful, and both Karim and I have probably resorted to those same solutions multiple times.

Windows has options to change screen brightness Change screen brightness in Windows - Microsoft Support. Check to see if a Windows Update may have changed these settings.
The Alienware Area-51m R1 (1/21/2019) may have a screen hardware fault. This could be the screen cable connection to the motherboard being compromised when the laptop lid is opened or moved. It could also be that the screen assembly has a backlight fault. Does this system have an extended Dell warranty?

The Dell Community seemingly does not have a gaming board.
Alienware Support - YouTube has Alienware Support: "Monster Hunter World" - YouTube.
Monster Hunter World makes PC screen dim and flicker at DuckDuckGo.
There are many internet search reports of Monster Hunter World having screen flicker, etc. issues and going to settings to turn off Direct X 12 has fixed this issue. Watch the following YouTube video:-
