M18x R2, NVMe Boot Drive

Since upgrading to a single GTX 1070 I have been wondering what to do with my secondary MXM slot. I managed to get my hands on a hard to find MXM to NVMe adapter and now I have almost full NVMe speeds in my 9 year old laptop. Pretty happy with the old girl.

    Hi @mattyb3 OK I will bite. How does one get the MXM3.0 to Ultra M.2 NVMe SSD Adapter For Notebook?

    @crimsom  You just have to be careful which one you get. The ones on Taobao are usually the prototype versions that only get half NVMe speeds, not the full 3000-3500 speeds. They aren't impossible to find but they aren't common.

    @TR_mustafa so it's all working?

    You'll just have to note that most of these adapters seem to have an issue where they draw power even when the laptop is powered down. This means that the battery will drain if left plugged in with the power off and the NVMe drive will be active and logging hours.

    Modded bios also eliminates this problem.

    @TR_mustafa I'm running on the unlocked BIOS as are the other guys I know who run the adapter. What modded BIOS are you using? Run CrystalDiskInfo and check the SSD run hours, power it off overnight and then check the hours again. Just see if the SSD clocked hours while switched off.

    I am unable to find V3 or V2 for M18xR2 and Tabao link is redirecting me to sign up. It also stated that they werent able to ship overseas. Does anyone have a valid link? I am RFQ'ing on Alibaba but the version displayed is for Clevo. I really want to top my M18xr2 off.

    On another note I want to say thank you Matt, ive been following your posts in various forums over the years to keep my machine current.
