We require separate plugins for backing up client filesystem and the applications running on the client.
To backup an application running on a client, you need to have installed both the filesystem plugin for the client OS and the specific plugin for that application. Also, the Avamar version of both the plugins should be same.
There may be some confusion of terminology here so I'd like to add some clarification.
The Avamar client software is required to perform backups and restores. The software includes three components:
The Avamar Agent (avagent) which runs in the background and communicates with the Avamar server to initiate backup and restore jobs.
The Avamar client software (avtar) which is started up during backups to read backup data from the filesystem (or accept backup data from one of the application plug-ins) and send the data to the Avamar server. During restore, the data flow would be reversed. The client does not consume any system resources when it is not running.
The Avamar GUI (avscc) which is an optional component for Windows and Mac OS clients that allows the end user to execute "on demand" backup and restore jobs. If installed, the Avamar GUI starts up when a user logs into the system.
In addition to the base client software, there are application plugins that can be installed separately to interface with various applications (Microsoft Exchange, Oracle, Lotus Notes, etc.) to perform application-consistent backups and restores. The plug-ins themselves are not agents -- they are started only during backup or restore operations and do not consume any system resources when they are not running.
Thanks ianderson, So, a client machine may have multiple agents running for deduplication, OS and applications ? or should the deduplication agent is enough to be present in Backup server alone ?
There is only one agent. An agent is a background process that runs all the time. The agent (avagent) is responsible for picking up backup and restore workorders from the server and starting up the client software to perform the backup. The client installer includes both the agent and the software for performing file system backups and restores.
Each application (Microsoft Exchange, Oracle, etc.) requires a plugin. Each plugin has its own installer.
There is no deduplication plugin or agent -- deduplication is part of Avamar's nature. Trying to make Avamar not deduplicate would be like trying to make water not wet.
Thanks ianderson for the reply. I was assuming we require separate plugin for deduplication as well as we do require it for separate applications . Will this pluggins for separate applications cost extra out of pocket or is it included with the single agent?
Does that mean we can run applications on the client without paying any additional cost for separate plug-in license? Just installing the required plugins from download page of avamar is enough?
