Hi. I have a potential customer asking if our emc 1tb sata2 3.5" drives ST1000NM0011 9YZ164-090 work with the dd620. I am not certain so thought i would ask. Thanks for your help
Thanks. I know the drive specs that you included. Just want to make sure the drive will fit physically. Unless all emc drives with same form factor will work
I one of the presentations (available through google search) I could find the details below. Although I haven't hadled these shelves manually, however I'm forced to believe that the one you have should fit.
The information I provided you is from Data Domain engineering documents. The Seagate model you inquired about failed qualification tests specifically aimed at the DD140, 160, 610, 620, 630 line of systems. This disk has passed other qualification tests for other Data Domain products (with the correct firmware) is a valid substitution for ES20, ES30 and certain systems head disks.
There are firmware limitations on drives in a Data Domain system. Other EMC products do not necessarily have the correct disk firmware even though they may be the same disk model. If a vendor updates a disk firmware, DD engineering must certify that a new FW version does not introduce issues with the system or DD OS.
The EMC parts compatibility internal site will list all parts that are compatible with a Data Domain system.
Either the system will dial home for a replacement disk or the end user calls support. The correct disk will be dispatched. There is no need for the end user to have the compatibility info.
There is a very good chance that current production disks from a vendor will not have tested firmware, therefore a customer needing that info is almost non existent. Systems out of support because a customer decided not to renew support can be handled by EMC on a T&M basis. Non tested disks could cause a data loss condition.
Now why a disk went from in use to spare is not normal however it could have had an error detected and was taken off line for the system to test the disk. If those tests came back OK, then the system will reintroduce that disk as a spare. The maintenance center feature of DD OS which controls this behaviour is a function of the newer DD OS releases.This would then give you the condition that you have observed.
