Latitude 7400 - Touchpad erratic

Hello there,

Can anyone recommend the correct Touchpad drivers for Dell Latitude 7400 running Windows 10 Pro x64? Currently its using default Microsoft drivers.

I have a brand new Laptop with an erratic Touchpad, especially clicking. It is sluggish and tends to hang.

I have tested the Touchpad via BIOS and it works fine, all Windows Updates applied and ALL Dell drivers installed.

As a workaround i am using an external mouse and have disabled the Touchpad.

Any advise will be appreciated, DELL Techsupport recommended to reinstall!

My mouse pad started freezing until I hard rebooted the computer with the power button (the only way I could at that point).  It was usually frozen when I came back to use it after time away.

I set the power setting for power and sleep for the Screen for both options to "Never".

It hasn't happened since.  I did use an external mouse until I was able to figure out this solution.

    Not ideal but it works.

    smartloom1,

You can click here and update it to the latest bios version.

Same here. Stops working, works in jitters, works, and then stops working quick enough to be frustrating.

Hi - I would do two things....

Go to the Dell support website and check for drivers using your service tag (and/or let the system auto detect your computer).

Make sure to download the drivers specific to your system.

2nd - go to Device Manager on your laptop and look for conflicts.(yellow sign with an exclamation point).

When you say that Dell recommended reinstall, what did they mean - reinstall of Windows?

    Hello Rhyalus_RSA,

I had tried both your suggestions before i contacted DELL Tech Support. I felt it was more of the Driver incompatibility issue as the Touch pad worked fine in BIOS.

Also there were/are NO conflicts detected under device manager.

Yes Dell recommended OS Recovery/Reinstall as it was Brand new Laptop with OEM installation. I did that but it did not solve the problem.

Its not that the touch pad does not work completely, its erratic. It will be working fine for 30 mins and then suddenly it freezes and i cannot click anymore, the pointer moves fine on the screen. I am now using an external mouse which works perfectly fine.

Just now I performed another Driver Update check and got the following 2 Updates:

    BIOS - Latitude_7X00_1.7.3

    Intel-Management-Engine-Components-Installer_YDD2R_WIN_1946.12.0.1328_A05

I have applied them and will observer how it goes.

    Thanks and best regards.

I am experiencing this same issue with my Latitude 7400. The problem has occurred ever since I received it new in November 2019. The trackpad will erratically respond for a short time (maybe 30 seconds) and then it seems to stop responding all together. Typically, I can put the laptop to sleep and then wake it back up to resolve the issue. The issue seems to occur most often when I wake the laptop from sleep or leave it sitting for an extended period of time without any input. However, I have had it occur in the middle of working on the laptop a few times. I have also applied all updates via the SupportAssist tool and Windows Update and the problem still persists. I also believe that this is a software issue/incompatibility rather than a hardware issue due to the fact that putting the laptop to sleep and waking it back up temporarily resolves the issue. Any ideas on what else we could try here?

    Hi timegineering,

I can feel your pain, I have resorted to using an external USB mouse and have completely stopped using the keypad.

After doing a complete reinstall of the OS, applying all Windows updates and running supportAssist to update all drivers the problem did not go away.

I am not sure how exactly your Touchpad behaves. but for me the Cursor does work however "Tap" to single click , wont work, then I have to click the physical Left button multiple times to register 1 click.

I have exhausted all the "Software/Driver" recommended solutions, only remaining option is to get the hardware checked/replaced and see if it works.

I have the same problem, it's awful, it shuts down and then works very incorrectly, it's impossible to work, do something about it!

I have the same problem with my latitude 7400 too. I use a mouse to work but it is very frustrating, that a new laptop has such a fundamental problem like that.

Just started for me. Makes me think it is a Windows issue opposed to a Dell issue. Go to sleep and the trackpad is gone on wake. Hibernate and wake it is fine. I don't even see touchpad drivers any longer on Dell's site. Just shows up as HID-compliant mouse with a driver from 6/21/2006.
