Atheros wireless customization for Inspiron E1505

Dear Dell Developers,
please please please enable us to choose for an alternative to that poor Intel PRO/Wireless 3945a/g!! I have a Fujitzu-Siemens laptop with has an Atheros based wifi card and networking works like a charm on Ubuntu Linux!

Due to some other compatibility issues now I'm planning to buy a Dell Linux Friendly laptop, but please Intel is a shame... even more on the networking side relatively to Linux drivers support.

I appreciated very much your effort to provide a linux-compliant laptop, but now please just let us choose not to have that card and an Atheros one instead. Choice, not necessarily by default.

    The Intel wireless works beautifully out of the box on the 1505 under Ubuntu 6.10 or 7.04. What's your problem with it?

    Indeed, Intel cards have consistently worked out of the box for me, regardless of the distributions I have used. As a matter of fact, when people ask me whether Linux will work well on their computers, the first thing I look for is the Centrino sticker.

    the problem with that wireless card is that if you want to enable monitor mode, you need to recompile the drivers and uncomment out the line...

    CONFIG_IPW3945_MONITOR=y

    by default, this is commented.

    other than that, the card works perfectly fine for your day to day use.
