Unable to lock authority file?

Hi:

When I use startx command, I get an error message which says Unable to lock authority file. I want to know how to solve this problem, so I can use GUI mode again. Do not search the solution on the Internet. I just did it. Most of them are not working. I want a solution that worked for you. Thanks.

You have a file in your user directory for this. I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that you can delete it, it will just recreate it. It's an hidden file called .Xauthority, with the "." at the beginning. Just try to back it up, and run startx.

PLease give more information: -distribution -exact problem: how do you start the graphical server? startx should not be used, usually it's more gdm or kdm.

I am using Mandrake Linux 8.1. When I power on the PC, it is supposed to boot into the Linux graphical server. Instead booting into graphical server, the Linux displays in the text mode. It asks me to enter username and password. Although the Linux does not follow normal procedure, but I say ok and enter a nonroot username and password. After succesful logging on, then I type startx to see if Linux can boot into the graphical server. But I only see the error message which I mentioned in the first post.

First, I'm not sure a non root user can run the graphical environment. Then usually you don't start X directly, but GDM or KDM. Try typing "gdm" if you are using Gnome or "kdm" if you are using KDE. If it's not working, try to run them as root.
