Just wondering if DELL is willing to release some info on their agenda with Linux. I'm over on the Ubuntu forums answering questions a lot and today a question rose up about upgrading to 8.10
I looked into it and I have a solid answer now. It's not in the repository for the dell mini.
A lot of people just reformatted their HD, and I just about did but I found the DELL OS really stable. Linux vs. Corporate Drivers is many a problem I think.
I am just asking, no rush. I personally would like to see more DELL mini support for the other distros of Linux. Xubuntu specifically in my case.
I did have an idea that I thought would help automate the process. I think it would help if you mandated a style for each version update that you will support. You have the DELL Desktop Mode. Keep that!!! Don't lose that because that is your homework. All you need to do is modify that to fit the other distros and your done. Then when each new version update comes out, rebuild the DELL Desktop Mode. -JUST REBUILD IT!-
Of course I think the money vacuum comes from driver support, but once you get those drivers in your repositories I think it should be easier to maintain from the initial installation.
Awww, darn. I was hoping this was an official answer.
I actually speculate the same thing about the LTS. I have recently heard that talk inside DELL is of dropping the Linux line all together. I kinda wanted to smash that rumor or admonish it as fact. That is part of the reason I create this thread. The other part is I think DELL is aiming in the right direction, but they are making some bad choices. On the Ubuntu forums we tend to agree that the stability that the DELL Linux version offers is great, but the mising functionality is a huge mistake.
I'm also asking because I want to know what they are planning.
Personally I think the DELL Desktop and the Desktop switcher is kinda cool. I don't use it, but I think it is kinda cool. I think it is very low end and simplified. But I think the way it places the main things in front it could make for an interesting platform for a new Desktop. I know onw thing though, if DELL makes a new linux distro without picking up the old users they are creating an EPIC FAIL.
I also hope they can afford to expand to Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and even Edubuntu. Plus SUSE, Debian (this is key for servers), and maybe even Red Hat.
I think Dell chose 8.04 LTS (long term support) over 8.10 for support reasons. Long term suport of a single version of Linux manes it easier for Dell to maintain.
