Alienware 18 upgrade

I have a question about upgrades. I am very happy with my 18, and I am even happier to see that Dell brought the 18's back into the fold. I noticed that briefly they were outfitted with 4790K CPUs, which is very attractive to me since the base speed is 4 GHZ. I know that I can pull my 4910MQ out and replace it with the 4790K, but what I do not know is if the bios is going to let me do this, or if I could get the bios that supported those Alienwares.

The other thing I am concerned about is the heat from these things. They are 25% less efficient in that regard to the 4940, so I am wondering about cooling issues in the laptops in which you placed them.

Anyway, if you could answer that or point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

John

     Hello,

For the new Alienware 18 models, the motherboard and Bios firmware was designed to support that type of processor. For the older models, the 4790K CPU will not be supported.

The Alienware 18 does not have support for any desktop CPUs, including the i7-4790K. It was a typo that shouldn't have been mentioned on the configuration page. It doesn't have the socket for one.

Your best CPU option is the i7-4930MX / i7-4940MX.

Just to be sure, my Alienware, being an 18 (although a year and a half old) can support the 4790K, right? I know it will plug into the mobo, but I want to make certainly that the A10 bois will be fine with it before I go spend 500 for a processor and an install.

By older alienwares, you mean the older 18x R* models, correct?

Thanks for your time. I really appreciate it.

***. You are correct. There is no way that chip will fit in my mobo.
