4700 Boot only in Safe Mode...
Hey All -- Truly frustrated as nothing appears to work after a few weeks of futility....
I have a Dimension 4700, running Windows XP, about 18 months old and recently downloaded the Windows Explorer 7.0 update from Microsoft. The next morning when I booted up, I got a blue screen claiming BIOS errors and now I can only boot in Safe Mode.
My CDRW won't write because all of the drivers are corrupted and when I try to re-install, I get even more errors which will not allow me to update, re-install, etc. (Windows updates won't fly in Safe Mode as well......)
I wanted to make an OS Restore Disc but can't burn the files......blah, blah, blah, wine and moan.....
This is my third Dell Desktop in as many years....my older boxes are working fine....love the product and have never had a problem.....until now. Regardless what I try, I can't seem to get this to come back in any form other than Safe Mode.....
Any ideas or does this become a boat anchor?

- Hey mombodog --Thanks for the quick reply! I removed IE7, have all of my important stuff already moved over to my laptop and other computer(s). I have a D Drive where all of my music files are stored so I can remove that drive if needed as well.....A buddy seemed to think I was having a main hard drive failure so I ran diagnostics mode and received the following error:Drive 0 Fail Return Code: 7I still get the blue screen error page with about five or six error strings but nothing that makes sense. I have tried to restore to a previous time and still get to reboot in safe mode.Do I need to wipe the hard drive clean and start all over. If I can't get to the OS Restore files, do I get discs from Dell? Or is making a backup on my other Dell (Dimension 2400) even a possibility?Is there any other system info you would need to help troubeshoot?Tx!

themp3djYou will need the Dell XP reinstallation disk, if you don't have the Drivers and Utilities, Applications and Resources CD's, then these can be download from Dell Download site.You replace the drive, then reinstall XP.How to replace the hard drive,Discussion on reinstalling XP on a D-4700,Dell's XP reinstallation guide,Bev.Please don't send me questions about your system by DCF Messenger.

A "Drive 0 Fail/Return Code: 7" error message, means that the C: / hard drive has failed and should be replaced ASAP.Bev.Please don't send me questions about your system by DCF Messenger.

- Great....! I was afraid this might be what was causing it but denial is not a river......So I guess I should try to find a good deal on a SATA drive to replace the one on-board now.....and will I still need to get discs from Dell?Since I am not sure of the correct sequence I need to follow, can somebody let me know the logical steps, i.e. - replace drive; re-install discs, etc.Again, thanks to all for the assist.....truly appreciated....!
