- I don't know what model Dell you have but anything I recall seeing on previous posts seemed to say that Dell's don't have the connector needed for using an internal card reader. Hopefully you can return yours and get an external one which connects to a USB port.
Ken - Internal card readers usually connect to a USB and/or Firewire motherboard "header", which is a series of pins. You may not have this header on your motherboard, or if you have USB ports in the front of your computer, this header is most likely being used by these ports.
Using an external card reader that plugs into a USB port is good advice. - Or, purchase a USB adapter card with an internal USB port and then you'll have your internal USB connection for the card reader that you purchased.
