Computer Hangs at the Dell Splash Screen
The power supply failed on my Dimension XPS T600r. I replaced it with a new one.
Several times afterwards, when I booted the system, after a few seconds on the Dell splash screen, the computer would go directly to the Setup screen on Maintenance mode. Regardless of whether I changed any values or not, when I got out of the setup I got the message "Jumper must be returned to normal position for settings to take effect. It is safe to turn the system off now".
The BIOS configuration jumper (J8A1, which I assume is the one the message is refering to) has never been touched, and is still on pins 1 and 2.
After a few of these boots, the system started hanging at the Dell splash screen. After trying to boot many - I mean many - times, it will finally boot. I will the use it for days without shutting it down, for fear of the problem. Sure enough, as soon as I reboot t back I am at the Dell splash screen.
The leds at the back are green-green-green-yellow.
I cannot run the disgnostic CD because the computer will not boot from the floppy. I upgraded from 98 (factory-installed) to XP.
- Here is a few things to try.... first go inside and reseat all the cables, cards, etc. Including the J8A1 jumper. Possibly when working inside you bumped something and it is no longer making good contact with it's socket. Secondly, try replacing the motherboard battery ($3). Possibly when the power supply was down and the machine sat idle the battery finally weaken and is failing. This pending failure could be corrupting the NVRAM where the BIOS stores information. Finally try clearing the NVRAM as the power supply failure may have corrupted it. Do a hard reset of clearing the NVRAM by removing the battery from the motherboard. With the machine unplugged from the wall remove the battery from the motherboard. Then with the machine still unplugged press the On button for several seconds to dissipate any remaining electrical charge on the motherboard. Then re-install the battery, plug the machine back into the wall and see if it will boot normally.
