C:\Windows\Temp Files, Delete?
Is it ok to delete all files in the C:\Windows\Temp directory? Even though my Dimension 4100 is less than a month old and I have installed only 5 programs (Partition Magic, Norton System Works, Power Desk, Netscape Communicator, and Acrobat Reader), there are 11 folders, some with subfolders and files, plus 65 additional files. Three are .exe applications.
One, mmsetup12018, is huge, almost 84 megs. I double clicked it to see what it is. Usually, an application stops to ask if you want to continue installation, what path, or for license approval, but this one just continued without any information or special windows. Install Shield (Norton) indicated it was Regsvr32.exe. Properties called it Microsoft Register server. It was installed in C:\Windows\System, but the file size there was only 37,136. Date is not current, so guess a reinstallation didn't occur. I decided to not experiment further. Any ideas about this application?

I was told you can safely delete stuff thats over 1 or 2 weeks old, as some temp files are tiny 1k-2k log files.
Win uses this space as a temporary parking spot for stuff while it installs it or minipulates the data and it sometimes leaves a copy of the program there.
Disk clean up should get rid of this stuff, but sometimes it leaves a bunch.
You can automate regular cleaning by saving a search that sez "show all files in win/temp that are over 2 weeks old"

I tried your automation suggestion, listing.....show all files in win/temp that are over 2 weeks old in the....Search for files or folders named....box. The search window listed 7456 objects, but many folders obviously didn't contain temp files. Others, like C:\program files were too big to check. Placing this statement between quotes didn't help. No files were shown.
I tried listing a date range in the date part of search options, but the system checked folder dates, not individual file dates. In other words, the folder date was used, even though the options specified file dates. Since the C:\windows\temp folder was prepared long ago, more recent dates were not used. Trying the three possible options, created, modified, and last accessed didn't help.
Also, how do you save a particular search criteria so it can be used later without re-entering all the data?
I'm using Windows Me, not 98, which may make a difference.
thanks, Jim

Usually the folders are totally deleted cause they have recognizable names of recently installed progroams that i know i can safely delete.
My search only shows 44 items, mostly tiny 1k gif or log files.
I deleted all stuff manually and just to be safe, left newer log files.
These tiny files don't take up any space so i wouldn't worry too much, just run disk clean, then manually clean it up every 2 months or so.
I don't know what to say about your searching, right after getting a new pc there usually is a ton of stuff in there from the inital setup, so that may be the prob. If the folder date is old or you're sure it's installed then delete it.
