Dimension 8400

i have the dimension 8400 reinstallation cd but when i  ask for a fresh reinstal it still keeps the old programs on and its using lots of space how can i get a FRESH clean hard drive with just xp on it

    You need to delete all existing partitions when you are prompted, then recreate the partitions and format the hard drive, following by installing XP.

    i did use that option now i get to the screen where you have to click enter to continue and it freezes any ideas

    If you want a "Clean" install you need to put the disk into the cd drive and restart the computer. Press the F12 key as soon as you see the Big Dell screen. This will bring you to the boot menu. Select the option to boot from the CD drive. and press enter.

    The computer will now boot up from the CD. at the installation screen you can select the option to reformat the harddrive which will wipe it out and then reinstall the operating system

    F12 options i see are as follows

    *onboard SATA Hard Drive

    *Onboard or USB CD-Rom Drive

     

    *System Setup

    *Hard drive Diagnostics

    *Boot to utility Partition

     

    as far as i can see none do say teh option you suggested any other ideas please

    thx 4 the help everything is restored but i have no net it needs teh driver for the ethernet card any idea which one it is thx agin

    by checking the device manager there is 4 flags for the following

    ethernet controller

    multimedia audio controller

    video controller

    video controller ( VGA compatible )

     

    the part i dont understand it was supposed to be back to factory condition instead it just restred the actual xp to a fresh which is cool but now i need help with solving other issue thanks for your patience

    First you need to READ THIS on reloading drivers. You are getting these errors because of this.

    You can find the necessary drivers HERE

     

    The desktop system software is the first you should install. Its under the System utilities on the second link.
