Dimension M233a - Memory errors?

Greetings,

I have this computer which is six months out of warranty. I no longer have any of the original software for it, but it has ran perfectly - until now.

When booting into Windows, it will give various error messages, usually involving illegal operation, gpf etc.

I've went so far as to completely format the hard drive and try to install Win98 fresh. During the install, setup freezes when it reboots after the file copy process.

The HDD completes the scandisk successfully.

Which leads me to believe that it may be a RAM problem, or something on the systemboard.

I have reseated the RAM and also the CPU.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The two cases I have seen that can cause this type of problem are as follows:

    • A virus.
    • One or more pieces of installed hardware or attached peripherals that, when Windows attempts to detect them, cause a lockup.
For the first case, try scanning the system with an anti-virus software that has been fully updated with the most recent virus definitions. For the second case, disconnect any peripherals attached to the parallel, serial, and/or USB ports on the system. If that does not help, power off the system, unplug it, open the case, and remove any expansion cards except for the video card. Ensure that only the monitor, keyboard, and mouse are attached, and attempt to install Windows again.
