Ethernet card problems

The other day my internet suddenly stopped working, but it isn't the cable connection or anything because my laptop works fine. I don't exactly what colors the lights on the ethernet card should be, but I'm pretty sure its suppose to be green and an orange blinking light. I've got only orange for both lights now and they're not blinking. Does this mean I need to replace the card or adjust firewall/software settings?

What is your set up, i.e., what kind of internet connection and how do you share it between computers?

It is connected via a wireless router, but that isn't the problem. I directly connected the ethernet wire from the cable modem to see if the cable line was working or not. My laptop which works perfectly fine is connected that way right now. All I did was turn off the desktop and then came back a couple of hours later turned it back on and found the internet not working.
Is it some goofy software setting or is the ethernet card toast?

Too soon to tell. Assuming your not using anything fancy, like a VPN or PPPOE, then I would just try resetting your TCP/IP stack. See How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP.

Do you get any errors like "network cable unplugged" ?

Click on start > run and type CMD on the open box and hit enter. From the DOS window, type IPCONFIG and hit enter.

From the options received, post back the IP address you see on the screen.

If the IP ADDRESS is anything else than 169.XX.XX.XX...try this step.

On the same DOS prompt...type PING www.google.com (Note:there is a space after ping) and hit enter.

Wait for a while and check if you see some replies on the screen...If you see "packets send 4 & packets received 4"..the network card is good.

Also try restarting the system in "safe mode with networking" and check if you are able to access internet. (To restart in "safe mode with networking", restart the system and hit F8 on the Dell logo, then choose the option).

    Cheers !!
