I couldn't install Floopy drive...
Hello,
Because my friend had an old floopy drive, he didn't buy it when customizing his 4700 received lsat weekend. However, when I wanted to help him install the old floopy drive on it, I found out that I couldn't install it because the case lacks a metal frame inside for me to put my floopy drive in and to use screw to fix my floopy drive.
Why didn't I have the metal frame in my desktop??? Is it because You won't provide customers with the frame if they don't buy the floopy drive when customizing??? If you do provide the frame, would you please send me that frame???
Besides, it seems that my friend doesn't have the cable for floopy drive cable, either. Will you provide that to us if you would send out the frame???

SleepyWu.The bracket is part of the floppy drive option offered by Dell, when you buy the computer.You can purchase the package, that includes the Floppy Drive, Bracket, Cable, Screw for $20.00+- from Dell Spare Parts, Phone 800.372.3355 Ext 69937 M-F 8-5 CDT.ceri sheeran

Dell UK wanted around £30 for this, plus tax when I specified out my 4700. This is a 50% more than the USB drive cost me and keeps the inside of the machine a lot clearer.
The USB drive is permanently plugged in and works as normal. I do have a removable drive icon permanently in the taskbar by the clock and can of course remove the drive. I've even been able to start Ghost from it using the F12 boot device option.
Dell UK will not sell me just the fixing kit, with no drive or cable, which is all I wanted. The Sony floppy disk drive only cost £6. To be charged over four times that, to fit is extortionate to say the least.

You're right, £30 [$54] is a high price to pay for the floppy package. That's a excellent workaround using the USB floppy.

No. it does not include S&H, I doubt that Dell will ship the floppy package free, because it was available as an option when buying the D4700.

You're right, the floopy drive is an available option when buying 4700. However, the website didn't mention that the option,floopy drive, includes the Bracket, Cable, and, Screw.
You can see the floopy drives at ANY local stores , and for most cases, they don't include the bracket and cable, which are usuallys included when purchasing computer case. That's why I thought DELL should've had the bracket at least.
I suggest DELL to put more information/details when customers customize the computer, especially for floopy drive. You should've put that the "option for floopy drive" includs bracket and cable. That would help customers a lot by doing so.

I agree with your comments. Dell's reasoning is that if the FD option is declined, then there's no need for the bracket and cable.
Personally, I think the FD should still be included as part of the basic system.Bev.

Some of the latest systems require a FD to install the SATA drivers also.

Hi,
Same problem.
I didn't select an internal floppy disk drive when I spec'd my d4700 out, as Dell were charging far too much for it. My wife picked up a floppy drive and cable for me, for a third of what Dell wanted to charge. Finally found out how to get it to bits, Ugh, nothing to fit it in, on to or with..
Not impressed though, as I spent a while trying to fit the wrteched thing, I even brought a 3½" floppy drive mounting kit to fit it
Solution was and is a USB floppy drive picked up for under £20. They are available for even less from some places. By using the F12 option I can boot from this drive and have done so to test things out. I can also place the drive well out of the way.
