I had the same problem when I formatted and reinstalled windows.  I was told to unplug the card reader completely and plug it back in while the power is ON!  Took me a bit of "courage" to do that but it worked!  4 drive letters will automatically be assigned as you will be able to see in My Computer.

Be very careful when plugging in peripherals while computer is on. Be sure to ground yourself, either by wearing an anti-static wrist-band, or regularly touching the metal case to discharge any static. Set it up before turning PC on, where the plug is selected and close to where it will connect.

Discharging static is also important when going into a turned off PC. Not only  can one static discharge ruin an electronic component, it may be your MB or video card.

From the motherboard - or from the device itself.  It doesn't matter.

Once the OS is reinstalled, you can then re-connect the card reader (as adfvised above) :emotion-5:

Sounds like no drivers are being installed.

My suggestion would be power off, unplug card reader, (just pop the plug out card reader end) reboot and then uninstall all yellow marks relating to the card reader in the device manager.

Power off, plug in the card reader and reboot.

If windows does not install generic drivers, try the ones from dell.

I had similar issues with my card reader, the trick was to get windows to pick it up.

Some times re updating the firmware via dell download works to kick start the card reader as well.

All - I reinstalled the O/S, loaded drivers, and everything was working.  I even loaded a Memory stick into one of the slots and looked at pics.  Somewhere in the Windows updates they disappeared from the "My Computer" view, and the yellow gremlins showed up under device manager.  Should I have completed all the Windows updates before re-connecting the device?  Also, do you think it's worth a shot to try to disconnect, then re-connect while on?  Another important piece of information for you is that my printer has card reader functionality.  I installed the printer, and the message box detected the printer, but said hardware may not function properly.  It showed up fine under "My Computer" and printed fine.  However, under device manager, the yellow gremlin showed up with the four card reader slots under storage devices.  I don't know what to try next.
