MOUSE functionality- XPS410

Howdy --
 
    I just received an XPS410 with a generic dell optical USB mouse.  The mouse has a scroll wheel with vertical and horizontal scrolling.  The default drive allows me to set up the scroll wheel for scrolling but does not allow the use of the third button (pushing down on the scroll wheel).
    In the past, I've been able to use a "generic" logitech driver to get this functionality and use the third button for auto double clicking, etc.  Logitech seems to have updated their driver/software (softpoint I think) so that it doesn't recognize a generic mouse.
 
    Does anyone have any suggestions?  I'd like to be able to use the third button as well as normal scroll wheel functions.

    I tried this on two different Dell computers that had default settings for the included Dell mouse.
     
    In Windows XP Pro SP2 the Dell generic (logitech) mouse will (by default setting) switch between open screens when the scroll wheel is depressed.
     
    In Windows Vista the Dell generic (logitech) mouse will (by default setting) remove the slide bar and turn the mouse into a slide bar when the scroll wheel is depressed.
     
    Since I don't use this mouse (on my personal comptuers) I was unaware of that function.
     
    In your case I would remove the mouse from the system hardware in control panel, then reboot.
    Once Windows rediscovers the hardware give the scroll a depress in Internet Explorer to see what happens. I don't think you need to install a seperate software utility to change the scroll function settings.

    I've used the other software/drivers in the past so I could control what the third button does.  I like to make it an auto double click.  I can't find a way to do that in Vista with the supplied drivers and I can't find a generic or compatible driver to hijack.
     
    Any thoughts on how to get an auto double click by depressing the scroll wheel (push down on the wheel as a third button)?

    You are looking for the old Mouseware drivers from logitech. If you can find them they will do what you want. Do a Google search and you will find several sources.
