Mouse problem? Or something else?

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 running Windows XP Service Pack 3.  (I know, a dinosaur, but it works!)  It has been problem free until just recently, when I began having trouble with my mouse.  It was an old-style ball mouse, so I thought it had just reached the end of its usefulness, and replaced it with a Logitech wired USB optical mouse.  Now that mouse is having the same problems, which are as follows:

When "mousing" over a screen, suddenly the mouse pointer leaps to one of the corners of the screen.

When attempting to "drag" (example:  a Mapquest map), it zooms instead.

If multiple windows are open and I try to close the top window, all windows are closed.

When trying to delete one e-mail from Microsoft Outlook inbox, all e-mails are deleted.

These are just examples of the many and various mouse pointer challenges I've been dealing with.  I have tried a multitude of fixes:  I cleaned the mouse.  I uploaded the newest drivers.  I went into the Control Panel and slowed down the mouse click speed.  Again in the Control Panel, I slowed down Hardware Acceleration a little.  I've tried everything I know to try.

Here's the kicker:  when I disconnect this mouse from my desktop computer and plug it into my Dell Inspirion, it does not seem to exhibit any of these problems.  Does this indicate that the problem lies with my computer, and if so, what should I be checking?

Help!!

    Donna:

That machine is certainly no dinosaur. In fact, your 3000 is newer than my everyday machine, a Dim 4550! :emotion-3:

Anyway, have you tried installing the Logitech drivers? That might override the current settings.

Yes, I downloaded and installed the most recent Logitech drivers, to no avail, I'm afraid.

When was the last time you did a thorough scan for malware?

Within the past few days, I've run complete scans twice; once with McAfee, and once through a Microsoft Live program.  Neither found anything malicious.

Have you tried a (different) mouse pad with the new mouse? But since it's happening with 2 different mice, of 2 different types, it sounds like it might be a software issue.

Did the new mouse come with a drivers CD, and did you install them? Is Device Manager correctly recognizing the new mouse (listed under Human Interface Devices)? And if the old mouse had its own drivers, did you uninstall those before installing the new drivers?
