Optical Mouse is so jerky
I have a Dell 8400 with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse. The problem is that my wireless mouse is so jerky that sometimes I have a hard time finding where the curser is. My computer is only a month old. I got the black mousepad with the silver Dell logo with my mouse. At first I thought this was just a one time thing, now it's getting annoying. I have reset it with the receiver and I have also tried another mouse pad. I'm getting rather frustrated and annoyed. Would replacing it with a regular PS2 mouse resolve this issue, or is there another answer? Anyone else having this problem. I was wondering if I should change the batteries, I don't know. Help is appreciated. Thanks. I hate calling tech support. I wait on the phone for hours.

Hi Thorne,
I'm not sure if it is a Logitech or not, but it came with my computer. It's silver and black and says Dell on it. The mousepad is black and silver and also has the Dell Logo on it. I just checked the specs on my computer, and it says it's an HID Compliant Mouse, and that is it. I've read several posts where a lot of other people are having the same problem. There is a green button on the bottom of the mouse that resets it, I've tried that. I've also tried updating the driver, as suggested in another post, but it says I have the latest driver. Right now it's acting fine, but I know sooner or later it's going to start acting weird again. My keyboard is also wireless and so far that is working fine. I have the receiver plugged in for the keyboard/mouse and the green light is on, so I know that is working. I've seen dozens of posts on this subject but really no answers.

- Hmm i don't know which driver you use, but my DELL came also with a Dell optical mouse, just not wireless. Had also similar problems with it on my old PC. Installed the MS Intellipoint Driver and the mouse works fine now.

I'm almost positive it is a driver issue. The driver(s) that came on the CD with the keyboard and mouse do not work (they access the volume control whenever you try to enter setup). Also the driver(s) caused problems with a driver from MyDVDNow causing computer crashes. I have not been able to find drivers for this keyboard/mouse anywhere and Dell support has been no help at all (now I can't even get on Chat, it says I'm not a home/office customer even though I have had this computer for less than two months and still have my order and tag numbers).
Currently Device manager reports a generic "HID compliant" mouse driver. I'd bet yours does too. Additionally I would bet the volume controller on your keyboard doesn't work, this is caused by the same driver problem as well. If you manage to find proper drivers for your keyboard/mouse, please post a link. If I do, I'll do the same.

Wojo,
Yes,I do have an HID Compliant mouse and driver, and I hate it. It still is jerky. I try to get things done and it is all over the place. One minute the cursor will be on the bottom of the monitor and the next time I will have to hunt for it because it will be somewhere else. It is much more than frustrating. I too, which I had gone with a regular keyboard and mouse. It's worth it to have two extra cords for something that works. I did check the volume control on my keyboard. It works. I'm surprised it does. Also, volume control works too.
Try this and let me know if it will help. Underneath the mouse and the keyboard you will find a very tiny green button. It is the reset button. Point each device toward the receiver and hit that button. Also, check the batteries in the mouse/keyboard. I just had to change mine and it's only been a month.
I'm not sure about the chat, but I do have other problems. Recording cds and dvds are a nightmare. I get error messages saying that a program isn't responding. I have problems with Dell Media Experience and the Dell Solution Center won't work. Keeps saying Page Unavailable. I was told this is due to incompatibility with WinXP SP2. I don't know if that is true or not. I ended up deleting the program to get rid of that useless icon. Makes me wish I had bought a different brand. I think next time I'll get somebody that really knows what they are doing to make me a machine. It's not worth this frustration because when I call Dell tech support they can't understand what I am saying and I can't tell what they are saying.

I don't think it is related to the wireless option on the mouse. I have set up 10 or 15 Dell systems in the last few months and all the new optical mice have been erratic and jerky. Most times the problem seems to go away with time.
The optical mouse works good on the desktop without a mouse pad. They just give you a mouse with the system because it is a standard item. You don't need any mouse pad with an optical mouse. It doesn't work very good however on a black shiny surface.
Day 1 with my new 4700. Another victim of the Dell mouse pad and an optical mouse. As soon as I placed a sheet of paper over the mouse pad the mouse became stable.
Tossing the Dell mouse pad and replacing with my old one. Disappointed to see so many optical mouse problems posted and none of the Dell troubleshooting provide the solution.

Cajun,
I'll have to try that. This mouse is driving me crazy because it is so irratic. Thanks for the tip. The Dell mousepad is rather shiny and slilppery.

- Although I do not have a wireless mouse for my dimention 8400, it is still really jerky and while playing games, the player begins to spin uncontrollably untill mouse is jerked around. I've tried cleaning it and getting different mouse pads, but nothing seems to work, I am considering getting a new 1, but dont want to spend the money. It is the mouse that came with the computer, so I believe that I am entitled to a replacement, but I am not sure.I am wondering if anybody else is having troubles with the non-wireless mouses.thanks, rich

Some people say that putting the wireless mouse on a plain desk without the mouse pad stops the problem. Others say putting a piece of paper under the mouse works. Most people I have heard from, including me, still have the problem. The mouse is all over the screen to the point where it is hard to get anything done. I too have tried cleaning it, using canned CO2 to clean the optical reader out. I've also replaced batteries. Nothing works. There are still a lot of people having the same problems. From what I heard, Dell knew about this for over a year.
Now, what I probably will end up doing is getting just a generic PS/2 mouse that plugs in. I have found that those plain mice work the best. You can, of course, call Dell and ask for a replacement, but I wouldn't count on it. It's worth a try, but they don't seem to care. I'm ready to throw my mouse out the window.
Now here is something else I just remembered. Seems as though someone on the board bought a PS/2 mouse and it did the same thing, nothing changed. It's like I have to fight with this thing every day. It's been like that since I got my system 2 months ago. I'm tired of it. The keyboard, knock on wood, seems fine. Hope it stays that way. Does the fan on your pc make a racket? Mine does. Just curious if yours did also. It's like a slow steady hum. I feel like hitting it upside the tower if I didn't pay so much money for it.
Let me know how things go.

which wireless mouse do you have? Logitech wireless mice work better on white background, MS wireless mice work on dark pads fine and white too.
Have the same Mousepad as you, and my Logitech MX1000 works fine on it, the older MX700 too.
Did you install any drivers or do you use the default which come with Windows XP?
