Precision M70 Memory Parity Error

--Customer Number 57642880--

Lately I've been getting dreaded blue screens of death with the following message:

*** Hardware Malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support

NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error

*** The system has halted ***

I have 1.5GB of memory installed in the system, all direct from Dell. I had 512MB preinstalled from the factory, and I installed 1GB myself when it arrived. These parity errors didn't start occuring until a few weeks after I installed the memory. Could it be that I have a bad stick in there? And how do I go about getting it replaced?

Just got the same issue.  New M70 with 512MB Memory.  I upgraded to 2.0GB :smileyhappy: and started getting the very undescriptive "blue screen" :smileymad:.  I was getting the error every 30 minutes or so, or if I started loading large apps.  I forgot to adjust the pagefile size, so did so and did not get the errors again

I am having the same problem, with BSOD and

    *** Hardware Malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support

NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error

*** The system has halted ***

I have 1G ram, and have set page file to 1536MB minimum and 3072MB maximum. I had no problems until I was running several apps, including "Google Earth". Now I have had 2 crashes in 2 days.

What pagefile settings do you suggest? Is this the only issue?

PS Since I sent this message, Dell support have told me that they are replacing the ram modules on this machine.

For 1.0GB memory, I would use 1536 for both minimum and maximum size.  I have always found using RAM + half for both to be the best config.

It's funny you mention Google Earth as well, I was running that on my M60 Precision before upgrading to the M70.  My roaming profile and redirected appdata bought the google earth settings and cache over...  would doubt though if it would cause a hardware error.

If you still don't have any luck, try re-seating the DIMMS or even swap them around.

Thanks for reply. My virtual memory settings seem OK, then. Will leave them alone. I'll start with the new ram modules...see how it goes then.

Thanks for the help everyone; I would have responded sooner, but I was out of town. I'm going to try adjusting the page file right now. I have 1536MB right now so I'll adjust to 2304MB (max & min) and see how that works. In case it doesn't, though, I'm curious as to how I proceed in getting the DIMMs replaced. Have any of you had your's replaced? Thanks, again, for all the help.

I would log a job with Dell to get the RAM replaced.  We normally get replacement without any issues as we are a large corporation, not sure of your  circumstances, but at least give it a try.

Same problem here.  My new M70's has had two parity errors in two days.  Factory 1 GB of RAM. My coworker's also had a parity error as well last week.

I was also having this problem - as well as a slew of other rather vague blue screens on my M70. It ultimately ended up corrupting my windows installation. I spent a good few hours on the phone with a support tech checking the memory using the diagnostic disc only to find my hardware all checked out.

So I swallowed my pride, reinstalled windows, and was in awe when I started getting the same errors - I did notice one of the blue screens, which was not an NMI parity error screen, said that it had crashed from nv4_disp.dll (an nVidia driver file). This got me thinking.

I ended up going with some different nVidia drivers via a 3rd party site rather than using Dell's "recommended" drivers and the problem has not resurfaced. It's possible some of you may also be experiencing a similar issue.

    Just a thought anyway.
