"Problems communicating with the Printer"

Have a Lexmark X83 that worked beautifully with old computer.  Now have Dell 4600 and I have unplugged, uninstalled, downloaded newest driver, and the only way to print is to turn off computer and reboot.  Will be calling Lexmark tomorrow.  When I emailed them they sent note referring me to my device manager.  Everything seems to be working according to my Dell.   I'm going nuts!  Bought an expensive computer to avoid such problems.  Ok, laugh with me....

Many thanks,

Problem is not the Dell, it's the Lexmark.  That is the typical problem with many Lexmark models including the X83.  But, I thought they had finally fixed the drivers as the number of complaints and posts on this forum about Lexmark I/O (communications) problems has dropped considerably.

Doublecheck to make sure you have all the updates for Windows XP.  You need the Windows XP specific drivers, and make sure you are installing the unit correctly.  DO NOT connect the unit first and then install the software which is wrong.  You need to install the software first and then when the installation program tells you, then connect the unit.

I do part-time computer support and have customers with several different makes of PC's and they are all having some type of I/O problems with Lexmarks and mostly the X83/X85 models. Most of my customers are still "fighting" problems with the Lexmarks but I have one that gave up and now has a 3 month old X85 that is collecting dust and has been replaced by a HP and no more problems.

Have you tried changing the port configuration from EPC to EPO or Bidirectional?

Bob, The Lexmarks use the USB port, not the Printer port, the ECP/EPP is only for Printer port connections.
