Problems installing printer
I have Dimension 8250 with Windows XP, recently upgraded to SP2 (not done by me, but some1 with more comp knowledge than mine which is basically 0).
Recently I became dissatified with my Dell A940 AIO printer. Since I don't use the printer too much, cartridges dry out fast and Dell too expensive at $65 a pop, so decided to purchase HP 1610 AIO, catridges will dry out too, but are cheaper lol.
However, I was unable to install printer (saw on board that some1 else had same problem). Cannot get drivers to install. After prompt to connect USB cable, I will eventually get 'device set up not completed' error message. Have tried HP tech support and after they failed to figure out why drivers won't install, told me to contact Dell (said there had to be a chip that made the HP printer not compatible with my system). Of course I have not contacted Dell, since they are barely any help with their own products.
Person who upgraded to SP2 for me, was convinced he could get the HP printer to install, but after even downloading latest drivers for my model from HP support, could not get it to install.
I gave up on the HP and tried to re-install the A940 (with dried out cartridges) from CD, only to find out that now it won't install either, all6 USB ports are out.
I have read what to do about getting them back and have some1 more knowledgable come and do it just in case there is a problem with doing that (have read in some threads that ppl did run into additional probs).
Decided to post this awfully long rambling message, in case some1 out there has any idea on how to get that HP 1610 to install.
Thnx

SP2 can "break" some software and it will no longer work or work correctly with Windows XP. That may or may not be the case with the new HP. However, the latest drivers on the HP site should be SP2 compatible.
Suggest you do a "System Restore" back to a point PRIOR to first attempting to install the HP printer. Then do an "orderly" uninstall of the Dell unit by uninstallig the software using the Control Panel Add or Remove software function. Then restart Windows (important - don't skip the restart). Then try the installation of the HP again using the downloaded drivers (and don't connect the unit until the installation program tells you).
