- If you are talking about naming your computer so that it can be used over a network, right-click on Network Neighborhood (My Network Places in ME) then select properties. On the identification tab, type in the name you want to give your computer.

Hi,
I believe your solution is Steve's solution (see the post just below yours from volcano11); the change I suggest is unlikely to produce the same result, but I can't tell you this for sure. I don't need Microsoft Client for Windows installed so I don't have it on my system, I'm afraid, and can't test it out.
Sorry,
Kay- thanks to all for the help.
i renamed the computer using networkproperties
and it all went fine and i was able to set
up a flawless direct cable connection.
now, if I could only get rid of the pesky dialog
box on my old W95 laptop that asks me for a password
to log on to windows and then tell me the one i type
in is wrong. good thing i can just hit cancel and
proceed.
dr - You probably can. Look in the control panel and select users and delete any users if any are listed. If that doesn't work run regedit and type in the user name (one you see when you log off) and do a search for it. Everytime it shows up change the name. Then after all has been changed restart the computer and you will see that box for name and password. Just click ok and don't enter a password and next boot you should not see it again. Then, if you want to go back to the original name again, do it all over and just be sure after the reboot you type nothing in and select ok.

Hi,
In Windows Explorer, right-click My Computer and choose to Rename from the context menu which appears. Backspace to remove the existing name, type the desired name in, and press the Enter key.
