Troubleshooting error messages...

I keep getting the two messages below in the event log on my Dimension 4550

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation. Event ID 51 - This message stumps me as my D drive is my DVD drive, which is rarely used.

I also get this message every time I get the above message - The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period. Event ID 9

Whenever this occurs, my PC locks up and it sounds as though the hard drive is ticking and clicking. Whenever the noise starts, my PC freezes up preventing me from doing anything.

Additionally, as of Saturday night, my sound quality has diminished greatly. Even on startup, the Windows theme is garbled and staticy. Additionally, my media player is acting like an old record player, skipping through songs like they are on a scratched record, as well as speeding up and slowing down sporadically like someone is changing the speed from 33 to 45 and back again. I installed WinAmp to see if it was my media player, but it is doing the same thing.

I have run disk cleanup, defrag, cleared my startup, cleared the event log, even rebooted in Safe Mode and I am still getting these errors. I have also run system diagnostics on the entire PC and everything has passed all of the tests.

My virus scan is up to date and my PC is virus free; however, I did have the Blaster virus at one time. I have also ran AdAware and Spybot to remove any spyware or unwanted files.

My PC specs...

Dell Dimension 4550

2.5 P4

768MB SDRAM

Thanks,

Ignore the letter "D" in the error messages, and pay attention to the references to (IDE) drive "0".  It sounds like your hard disk is having some fairly serious access problems.

I would run the quick IDE diags at boot (F12 at the dell splash screen/run IDE diagnostics), and even beyond this, I'd run the Dell Resource CD hard disk diags as well.

It could be that software problems are mimicking a hardware problem or potential failure. That said, I'd still be darned sure to back up any data I loved until I could get the source of the errors identified.

    Good luck
