If you use a non-Dell motherboard, you would need to buy a new retail copy of XP, Dell's OEM copies are tied to their BIOS.

The 2400 supports a micro-ATX board, but the Dell 2400 motherboard is a heavily modified micro-ATX.

None of the above are compatible with the Dell Dimension 2400 motherboard and BIOS

The 2400 supports DDR memory, not DDR2.

You can use either 400MHz or 533MHz, Socket 478, P-4 processors with a 512kb or smaller cache, no Prescott, Core 2 Duo or dual core processors.

The default heatsink and motherboard retention bracket are proprietary.

Uh yeah I knew that none of that would be compatable with the dell MOBO, but as you see one of the items I've listed is a microATX intel mobo, I thought i might have to replace windoze anyways, is it possible to still buy copies of XP, and is the Socket 478 limitation TIED to the mobo or tied to the power source? Its been a while since I upgraded a computer... :( Thanks for your info!!

Oh, Yes, you can still buy both the full retail and the OEM copies of XP.

You might be able to install the MicroATX motherboard in the 2400 case, but you would need to figure out Dell's undocumented front panel connectors.

Most people that upgrade the motherboard, usually find it easier to buy a standard ATX case, instead of using the Dell case, but by the time that you have purchased all the parts required, it may cost less to buy a new system.

Yes, a member installed Intel DG965OT micro-ATX socket 775 motherboard into a Dimension 3000, that has the same chassis [case] as the Dimension 2300, 2350, 2400, 3000, 4600, and 4700.
