USB Keyboard & Mouse stopped working
A funny thing just happened this morning with my XPS 400. I installed a Windows update this morning and restarted my computer. Well now the USB keyboard and mouse aren't working.
BIOS detects and lets me use my keyboard, but as soon as I get into Windows it dies along with the mouse. I've tried different USB ports, but I really don't think the port is the problem since BIOS sees the keyboard just fine.

swingkat,
Do they show up in safemode?
* Power the system off
* Power the system on
* At the blue Dell, tap F8 to bring up the Windows boot menu
* Scroll to and select Safe Mode [Press the Enter Key]
* Select the first or only operating system [Press the Enter Key]

No safemode, what about Last Known Good from that menu?

- I had the exact same problem after downloading the latest microsoft update. I have a 310-4170 cordless keyboard and mouse on an XPS 400 system. Several times I had to boot before it worked again and then went to system restore and went back two days and restored and since haven't had a problem.
- I just spent an hour or so online with a DELL Technical support. Their conclusion was that is was a problem with Windows and I should re-install XP from the hidden partition. That is a cop out but I guess it is difficult to diagnose this type of problem. I have a WinMe machine that went 6 years without reloading Windows. The same machine had Win98 on it for 3 years and only had to be reloaded once. That's because I was always able to find a way to work around the problem or get it fixed. I expect this problem has a simple fix too but what is it? Until then I'll be leaving this new 9150 in Stand By mode.The file "lsass.exe System Error the endpoint format is invalid" occasionally appears during some of these problem boots. When it does the boot is even less successful.Word of advice. Before following Tech Support instructions, make sure you create a restore point.
- Yikes. I thought it might have been the windows update. I guess I'll have to do a restore to get back to before I installed the update. Wow could Microsoft have created a worse patch?! I mean come on. On the other foot, my Microsoft computer has been as secure as it's been in the past week by being OFF. :)
Thanks all for your input. I hope the Dell CDs I have are bootable and can help me do a restore.
Any idea what the windows update was that caused the crash? I'd LOVE to avoid it in the future!! Thanks again everyone.

I tried in safe mode and didn't see it either. I couldn't even choose a user to boot up windows.
