USB Keyboard

Hi,
I have a new dimension 9150 with xp home preinstall.
I try to install a xp prof from original CD, but after windows kernel is load, I can't use my usb keyboard to install xp.
My dimension has just usb ports (without ps2- for mouse or keyboard!)
How can I install xp prof with this keyboard?
Thankxs

Try switching the port the USB keyboard is plugged into.  On some of the newer Dells there is one USB port that is active during boot up that will allow you to use those devices for non-Windows activities like using PC Restore or for OS installation.  Otherwise the USB ports are inactive until Windows loads the necessary drivers.  On the Dell models that have an active port, that port is located on the rear of the system and is usually the one on the upper right.

Look in BIOS to see if there's anything like "legacy USB support" that you can enable to allow the keyboard to work. And then you may have to try all the USB ports on the rear again to find the active one.

I found this post and thought it might explain my issue.

I have a usb keyboard and prefer to connect it to the usp port on my monitor. When connected there, I cannot use it during boot up to enter the bios set up. If I connect it directly to the upper right port on the cpu, it works during boot up.

I connected the usb cable that enable the monitor's usb port to the upper right port on the cpu hoping it would make the keyboard active during boot up, and it did not work. Is this because of the "daisy-chain" effect. Is having the keyboard connected to the cpu my only solution?

    Thanks for any help.

Keithknepper,  one other thing you can try is go into your BIOS Setup and see if there is an option for Legacy USB Support or USB Emulation.  If there is then enable that setting.  With this BIOS option enabled the BIOS will support all the USB ports during the boot up period before the Windows drivers are loaded.
