VFAT error???
hello. i have been stuggling to get my Dimension XPS R350 to boot up Win98. all of the sudden it just won't boot up. i get the Win98 logo screen like it is about to start up & then nothing. just a black screen.
i have check the BIOS & everything looks fine. i have also used the scandisk & chkdsk tools & am finding nothing wrong.
i can get the computer to boot in DOS mode with the 98 boot disk, with cd-rom support. so, i put the 98 cd in the drive & tried to get it to run windows. it tried to start but i am getting the message "VFAT Error".
a few folks have suggested the RAM chip might be bad. any other ideas? also, is there a way to test a RAM chip?

Try formatting your hard drive and reinstalling windows 98 from the scratch. I had this same problem with my pc before. It's not about having a bad ram but having those times that you needed to reinstall windows and having to start over again. Insert the boot up utility disk. At the a: prompt type fdisk. Delete all partition after doing so. Insert windows 98 cd on the cd rom and restart your computer. This will install windows 98 back to the point where you purchased your computer. I know its frustrating but it was the only way i got my old computer running again.
