Windows 7 oem refund....
Hi
I am a University Student who have just purchased a dell computer. It is being shipped with Window 7. I am a computer science student and have no use for Microsoft Windows 7. I would like to know what is the refund policy on over priced useless software like Window 7. I can really use the money to buy a nice big fat text book for one of my class.
I had heard other people mention that if you decline to accept the eula then you are entitled to a refund but I'm not sure how it works.

There is no OEM Refund.
What Products Are Not Eligible for a Refund?
- Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) software preloaded on a PC
- Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) software sold separately from PC
- Product obtained through volume licensing or subscription
- Product acquired for free via electronic distribution
- Products purchased through electronic transmission online or over the Internet
- Reseller/retailer and contractor products
- Products purchased through the Product Information Center
- Products obtained as Not For Resale product
...over priced useless software...
It may be overpriced and useless, but you already paid for it! :emotion-5:
You could sell the disc on Ebay and get $20-25 for it. The disc itself is useless without a license, and can only be used with Dell systems.
like you i have on more than one ocassion had no need for the operating system that came bundeled with my system.
after receipt of the system i have in the past called customer service and gotten a refund and a pre-paid return shipping lable to send back the software cd/dvd. these days most machines do not come with the the media (cd/dvd) unless you purhased a vostro, precision, optiplex, or latitude (and not in all cases). the refund amount was about $30 and quite frankly did not cover the cost in time to get the money back. so it isn't so much the money but the principle of the matter that drives me to do it (particularly durring the vista days - a problematic operating system forced upon users for a while with no alternative option).
good look with calling customer service and please report back your experiance.
because dell's system configuration page does not usally allow the customer to delete particular items from a system There is nothing forcing them to buy from Dell. If Dell does not provide the option you or others desire, you have the right to shop elsewhere.
it more econimcally prudent to purchase the cheaper system and return the os That is reasonable. But again, I want to clarify that it is a risk, as there is no guaranteee of a refund.
(By the way, welcome back, Chris... Haven't see you here in a while. Hope all is okay.)
As Speedstep stated, Dell is not obligated to provide any refund on Windows 7 - or any OS. If you do not want the OS, you could return the whole computer, as the OS is tied to the computer.
I do not understand why some people order a computer with something they do not want, but a refund of $25-$30 at least seems reasonable. I have seen people here expecting to be refunded the cost of an OEM OS if they were to buy it (around $100), not the low volume price Dell pays, which is probably closer to the $25-$30.
But... If you are able to get your $25 - $30, great. And if you are able to get a textbook for tha amount, cool for you...
and, of course, customers also have the right to returns things they purchased from dell. Agreed. He can return the computer.
If you are implying he has the right to return just the OS, however, please note Speedstep's post with a direct quote saying that an OEM OS is not eligible for a refund.
Wouldn't it be great to go to McDonald's and order a Big Mac with no lettuce and expect a refund for the lettuce?
Or buy a car knowing I was going to put custom taillights on it and expect a refund on the taillights that came with the car?
Now that I'm thinking about it, my TV has a built in tuner that I never use - we use a cable box. Should I have requested a refund on the tuner?
Seriously expecting to return parts of a single item for a refund is unrealistic in most situations. I don't see why this is any different.
Regardless, as I said, there is no guarantee that the OP will or will not get the refund. All he can do is try. Franky, for $25-$30 it seems worth it to keep the OS.

This section is for Hardware problems. And we are users helping users not Dell employees.
There are many posts in the Linux section about this. And to my knowledge no refund has ever been given. If you decline the EULA then the PC software will not install but you still won't get any refund. If you want a PC without an OS you will have to buy somewhere other than Dell that sells them that way or build your own.
