Well, these laptops aren't server class hardware or anything. I would suggest that you set a standby time of one hour, and shut it off when you go to bed at night.

I would recommend shutting it off every evening if you aren't using it for anything.

I have a 600m and when I leave it on overnight, it tends to get pretty hot. I think the 5150 uses a desktop chip too so its probably best to shut it off every evening.

Oh yea...I've had my laptop for around a year...seems to be no problems at all! :-)

I usually shut it off at night, and when I'm leaving for more than an hour, I usually put it in hibernation. I have a new I5150 and I want it to last as long as possible, plus, with two servers in my room that run 24/7, I don't need a laptop running, just more noise while I sleep. :)

I don't see any problem with your way. It should run cool as you probably only have some instant messaging ap open, maybe a browser. Watch your temps if you are running file sharing stuff - Kazaa or some other programs that do who knows what. As long as your temps stay normal, no harm done. I run mine for days on end, so does my son and so does my daughter. I've always done this with laptops (other brands as well). The only things that may wear out sooner are mechanical items, such as fans or hard drive. You can control the monitor and hard drive functions in the power settings of course.

I would tend to agree with parkerti in that the mechanical items may wear out more quickly, but as long as the temps stay reasonable, you shouldn't have any major problems.  Also, some users have reported dust buildup in the heatsinks of the 1100, 5100, 5150 series, so keep a close eye on that and clean in periodically.
