audio problem

I have a Inspiron 1100 laptop and it has been acting weird lately. Theres is no audio and when i try reinstall the audio drivers, the audio still doesnt work. Also sometimes the windows that I open resemble that of windows 98 when I am using windows XP. I think something is wrong with the sigmatel driver. Also a window pops up when i enter windows saying an error occure and "do u want to send an error report." I need help please. I would appreciate it very munch, Thank you.

    Benny,

That thing about looking like Windows 98 doesn't sound like any sigmatel driver issue that I've heard of.

    1. Try running Dell diagnostics. It uses a driver on the cdrom so that if the audio test fails it is probably due to hardware.

    2. Try using XP's system restore to see if you can revert to a time before these problems.

    3. Go to Start/Run and type in sndvol32.exe The audio drivers won't install unless this app is first properly installed.

    4. Try another driver. Here is how to install one that is known to work well on the 1100 (this assumes the sigmatel driver is installed):

Go to Start/Control Panel/System/ Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager. Go down to Sound, Video, and Game controllers and right click on SigmaTel. Choose properties. Go to the Driver tab and click on Update Driver. Answer "No" to the Windows Update question. Choose "Install From List or specific location". Hit next and then choose "Don't Search, I will choose driver I want to install". You will get a list of Sigmatel drivers. Uncheck the box that says "show compatible hardware". Select Intel, and then select "Intel AC 97 Audio Controller". XP replaces the SigmaTel driver with the Intel AC97. To reinstall the SigmaTel just select "Rollback Driver".

    5. If nothing else works you might have to re-install Windows XP.

    Hi Jim,

I am having the same problem as Benny. I did what you said in step 3 and it said not found.

I don't even have an icon for volume anymore. I did, I don't know where it went.

I have the same laptop, the 1100 Inspiron. It was bought used so I don't have any the original software. I just recently bought a new Dell PC can I use any of it's software for restoration?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Tammi,

Here is a link to Microsoft's instructions on replacing sndvol32.exe if it is missing
    Link

I don't know if you can use your cd-rom to restore software. I'd give it a try.

To download software from Dell, look above in the left corner and click on 'Product Support'. Follow this path: Product support/Downloads.

Enter your Service Tag number and click on the arrow next to the number.

Under 'Select Your Download Category' select Audio Drivers or whatever. Then select your operating system and system language. Click 'Submit.'

If you don't know your Service Tag number then leave that box blank and instead select your Product model from the 2 dropdown boxes. Click on the arrow. Under 'Select Your Download Category' select Audio Drivers. Then select your operating system and system language. Click 'Submit.'

    Good luck with it. Jim
