Blinking cursor at startup

I get a blinking cursor on a black screen in the upper left when I power up my friend's Dell Inspiron 1526. I can get to the Setup Menu and the Boot Menu by clicking F2/F12. How can I resolve this? Do I need a recovery disk? If so, how can I obtain one? This is a Vista system.

Thank you for anything you can do to help. This system is just one year old. :emotion-15:

Press F12 at powerup and boot to the Dell diagnostics.  Run the extended hard drive and memory tests.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately when I select Diagnostics and click Enter I get the black screen with the blinking cursor on the upper left. Any ideas?

I also want to add that I when I power up the Dell I get a message stating:

    Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

The AC power adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.

Please connect a Dell adapter …

To resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter.

Strike the F3 if you do not want to see the power warning messages again.

Strike F1 to continue; F2 to run setup utility.

Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics.

F1 allows me to continue to the boot menu; but F2 and F5 are unresponsive. I downloaded the Dell Diagnostics drivers to a CD but so far have had no luck booting from it.

Thanks for any suggestions! Unfortunately this computer is just over a year old and just out of warranty.
