Cannot Log On

Hello,
 
I have a Inspiron 5100 with XP home edition.  I forgot my XP password.  I let my son try to get in for me but ended up with it now not even booting into Windows.  I now have a screen that comes up before any booting takes place that says "Enter Password" then give me my service # in parenthesis.  What can I do?  I'm completely lost now.

    well that would be a bios password and the only way to fix this problem is to call dell with proof of ownership and they will give you a master password.

    I figured that was what I would have to do but thankfully I finially remembered my password.  Thank you so much for your response.
