Chipset

Hi

I have been checking out the possibility of buying a couple of InspironTM 9300 laptops to support a small recording studio.

When I checked out the systems prior to xmas the specs used to show which chipset each Dell system used.  That now seems to have been removed.

I noticed that the 9300 claimed to have used the 914PM chipset , I wonder if that is still the case ?   The 915GM chipset is no use for the audio applications we run.

Can anyone from Dell confirm ?

The specs in the owner manual says 915PM.  It's a pain that it's not on the order page anymore.  Still, you can find it here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/en/om/om_en.pdf on page 99.

If you order and this is wrong, it's reason enough for a free return

    Many thanks for that info.

Do you know which of the other Laptops in the Dell range use the 915PM chipset ?

It's a pain they removed this info because it is critical for use in both Audio and Video editing and will sway the mind of the buyer.

most people don't care ... honestly though, I would assume you'd be using an external card if the audio capaibilities are that important to you

There is a USB delay of 40us with ALL 915GM chipsets when using a specific set up involving most external USB cards.

    Also

Shared video is a no no in any Audio set up ( hence why the 915GM is not suitable in any form, be it Laptop or Desktop because it share main memory  ). During a screen refresh the Audio will glitch.

Dells have been used in a Studio enviroment for a long time and the Intel 915GM chipset has been a problem from day one for both Audio and Video applications

    INCLUDING

    Serious gamers

So the issues with the 915GM chipset will effect quite a few of Dells potential customers.

The 915PM chipset has no such issues and has been tested and approved by most of the high end A/V software suppliers.

The A/V market has a big captive audience and Dell taps into that quite well, but it is common knowledge between most of us in this field that this chipset is flawed ( its on most A/V forums ), that we often check out Dells website to see it there being used or not.

well, it's a little extra effort, but just look in the user manuals like I did ...  detailed specs are always in the appendix sections

After all that we gave up trying to buy a Dell online !  It was to much hassle and the so called special extra 5% discount ( applied at checkout ), didnt ;(

We got so fed up chasing the dell site around every day as the prices changed quicker then a whores knickers going up and down we bought 3 x IBM thinkpads and a Toshiba.

We may have paid more , I dont know ?  But it was easier and there web site was more honest ( no hidden costs to remove ) and the pricing was consistant.

But thanks for the help anyway

Right, and the specs are correct: I do own two 9300 (one is made in september 2005 and the other is november 2005) and they do all have 915PM as reported in the specs.
