Computer shuts down before complete install
I just received a SmartStep from a coworker, who clamims the computer is 'broken' and said it was mine if I wanted to try to fix it. When I first started the computer, the start up process would only reach to the "DELL" logo and then start over... and over and over and over.
So I tried to reinstall Win Xp Home, but it only reaches halfway and then the computer shuts down. The battery is charged and plugged in, but it appears as though there's no powersource. Do I just need a new battery? Could it BE that simple?
Thanks!

- Thanks. I already wiped the harddrive and formatted it. I don't care for any information that's on the computer, so that's not an issue. But I think I figured out it's the powersupply that's the problem. When I charge the battery, the battery light doesn't light on the computer. When I jiggle the cord, the red light come on, but it won't stay on for more than 5 minutes. The computer WILL start without the adapter plugged in, but it will shut down after 15 minutes.
I don't even know what the light it supposed to look like (red, green, flashing?) when the battery is charging or when it's fully charged. I wouldn't mind taking the computer to get repaired. Does anyone know how much it would be if it's just a powersupply issue (i.e. broken jack)? I live in NYC.
Thanks! - I had a similar problem. I got so mad that i ripped the cord right out of the power supply. Happy ending though, I soddered the 2 wires back together and the power supply worked flawlessly. You can buy a new power supply, bu i think they're like $60 or $70. If you are just gonna get a new poer supply, try what i did first (hey, it's broken anyway!)

You could also check the power supply: see if the computer even turns on without the battery in it.
