D810 Touchpad not responding

I just purchased a used D810, the touch pad is not working. Is it possible that it could be a driver problem? I have no restore disk, resource disk, diagnostics or anything other than the Win XP Pro disk. Should I start by getting the originals if possible, or just get a new touchpad? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Yes I am a newbie.

    Hi Grey,

There could be a couple things wrong so it's hard to say for sure, but I'd start with going to the product support section of Dell.com and entering the service tag of that computer (if it's still on there and still legible). Go to the downloads & drivers section and download the pointing device driver in the "input" category (the following link is what I found for your laptop).

If you download the driver and it's still not working, make sure that the device is enabled through the device manager under Control Panel --> system. If the device is enabled with the drivers installed and your still not getting any response, then it's most likely either disconnected or a faulty/damaged touchpad.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Wildcard,

Thank you for such a quick response. I did run the service tag, downloaded the driver you suggested, Dell also. During the installation, a box came up and said aborted or could not finish, why, I don't know. The box disapeared. Now when I go into device manager and look at hardaware it has put an IdeaCom HID Touch Screen (PS/2) in there, says it is working properly and is enabled. Now everytime upon turning on it is trying to install a printer. There is no printer attached period, nor is there one even listed.Yet new hardware is found. LOL So I guess the touch pad is faulty or unplugged as you suggested. So I guess I will look for a service manual on how to take this apart and look to see if it is plugged in. Do you think it would make a difference if I just reformatted and put everything in fresh and follow the driver install order? I did down load all drivers, Applications and Utilities to cd for future use, for my tag no. The touchpad according to Dell is Alps. It is a shame it is not working, according to service tag it is only 3 years old, I only paid $200 for it and it looks like  new. I bought knowing it had unresponsive touchpad. But I figured it should be easy fix, hardware or software. LOL It was an offlease unit, the ctrl F11 function does not work for this unit.  Any other suggestions?

    Thank You, Grey

    Hello again Wildcard,

I got the touch pad fixed. I reinstalled the operating system and installed all the drivers. It works great now. It must have been a software problem. Thank you for your help and the link to the drivers page and info on running tag no.

    Thanks, Grey
