dead pixels develop?

hi,

do dead pixels generally appear only at the time of manufacturing, or can you develop more and more dead pixels over time after you receive your laptop?

The industry standard is up to 5 dead pixels. If you have more than 5, you better call tech support and have the LCD replaced.

I have found that pxiels can drop off over time -but not necessarily. I suspect any flexing in the screen does not help - always close the screen with both hands on each opposite edge if possible to reduce flexing, which is mostly at time of opening and closing screen.

yeah at thsi point i have none, but i was just wondering if they eventually appear after extended use.  i suppose that the answer for all electroincs is that they to wear out.

How many dead pixels (ballpark firue) do you get if ever it appears? When you restart your computer, are they still there?

    All,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

In my 5 plus years supporting portables at Dell, I have never seen a pattern to what causes dead pixels.  Some LCDs have them, when new, some develop a few after use.  The one thing that I do know is that getting or having a dead pixel is not a sign that other pixels will follow.  Dead pixels do not generally appear as a degenerative problem (a few now, another tomorrow, a few more next week, etc).  If you have a few bad pixels there is no strong evidence that more dead pixels will ever appear.

Why is there a discolored pixel on my portable computer or flat-panel LCD screen and what are the quality standards for these displays?
