Hardware Problems Can't Fix...Help Please
I haven't added anything new but I'm getting hardware conflicts and can't start my computer except in safe mode. I have to unplug the mouse, and external harddrive and I can get it to boot up in safe mode. It doesn't recognize the printer or dvd player. However if I install a cd it will lock up.
It takes about 4-10 times to get it to boot to safe mode without freezing.
It shows no errors in my hardware ware configuration area. I ran scan disk and defragged. Updated both my spyware and Norton programs and ran them. No problems found. When I run checkdisc it won't finish the process I think because I'm in safe mode. Also I can't get Dells program to check for hardware errors I'm guessing because I'm in safe mode. I also updated and ran Registry Check and it's finding no problems.
I'm stumped! If I do a system restore does that delete emails, jpgs, and everything or just system settings?
Thanks

- Thanks for the info. I'm thinking you may be on to something because my hard drive ws very noisey for a month or so. When you say run diagnostics what are you referring to?
I can run scan disk and defrag ok but when I try to run check disc my pc freezes but I think its because I can only get to safe mode?Whats my best option for a HD in a Inspiron 8200. Do I have to buy from Dell or do I have alternatives? Thanks again! - on bootup, you can try pushing F12 at the dell screen to get to the one time boot menu. You may have the option of harddrive or ide diagnostics. If you don't though, you should have the option of diagnostics partition or simply diagnostics.
If you don't have those, boot off of the drivers and utilities cd's and you can run the express diagnostics. Those will test the harddrive fairly well, and if there's any major issues they shoudl find em. If it doesn't you can always run the custom diags on the harddrive, but a few of them tests will take about an hour or so.
or you could find out hte manufacturer of the harddrive and download their diagnostics, but thats generally a lotta work. - Ok I've tried to run diagnostics about 20 times with no luck. When it starts daignostics about half way thru it gives me an error message to insert the disk with the diag programs on it and re-install. Well the CD is not working. It either recognizes nothing in the drive or locks up the minute I click on CD drive. So I went ahead and did a system restore to about 45 days ago and it seems to be working fine until I click on the CD drive.
Can a bad CD drive cause these issues because that is what it is pointing to. Where can I get another CD drive? Do I have to go thru Dell?
Thanks again! - Well I just answered my own question I guess. I took out my DVD Rom drive rebooted and everything seemed fine. As soon as I plugged in my external HD to back up some stuff it froze up again. I cant run diagnostics because it says it needs the CD and the DVD wont work. What the heck do I do now???? Do you think my HD is bad? If so do I have to go to Dell to get that?

I'd run diagnostics on the machine. Make sure the harddrive isn't straight out failing or something.
