I can't print.....=(
I just got a StarTech Parallel to USB cable to connect my HP DeskJet 842c to my Inspiron 1100, which is running off XP. When I print from Notepad upon startup, there's no problem. Then when I try to print from Word or Excel (Quattro Pro), I get a "document failed to print" message, with no other details. The troubleshoot option has no info regarding this problem. After this happens, I can no longer print from Notepad. I have to reboot to print even from there. Please help! The Microsoft page says XP is compatible with this printer....Thanks.

Thank you for your response! I actually didn't have the software handy, so I downloaded it from the hp site. I had already connected the printer beforehand; I hope this didn't screw things up. I tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling everything just in case, and I'm still having the same problem. Do you think there's something wrong with my cable??? Thanks for your input.

Well, seeing as its not the drivers, it could be either a different software or hardware issue.
1. Software: Office applications are for some reason not allowing you to print, and are then somehow blocking other programs (notepad) from printing (probably because the office document is still first in the print queue). I suggest reinstalling (or repairing from CD) MS Office to see if this fixes the issue. If it doesn't, the problem is likely with hardware.
2. Hardware: Potentially there are two hardware issues. One is the cable, you should return that for an exchange first up, to see if a new one fixes the problem. The second, if the new cable fails to help, is that the printer itself is faulty, in which case you should contact HP for repair/ replacement.

Thank you very much for your input. As it turned out, all it was was a bum cable...apparently the parallel to usb conversion doesn't usually work very well. All I had to do was connect a usb cable directly, and everything was fine. Oh, well, it was a learning experience anyway! Thank you for your help!
