A CPU only needs the aplication of Thermalgrease 1 time.(Unless you bought some Artic Silver 5 or ceramique, & wanted to cool the notebook more. See they call these ZERO-force sockets, for that reason, if you bent the pins you must have forced it. I've bent pins before, & got it back to working. Do you know for sure you, made perfect contact with the CPU & HS??? I'm not sure you should try again, as was said, these 533 FSB cpu's are cheaper. I just put a 3400+ in my 5150 last week...(I wish the GPU could be upgraded, to even a 5700fx go) but it appears there's no room...

Wow. The 5150's bios will recognize an AMD CPU?? That's interesting. What kind of difference are you seeing playing games with the mediocre Go5200 and the 3400+?

What made you ASSume, that I was talking about an AMD chip?

I put a 3400Mhz P4 533FSB, CPU In, runs great, Doom 3 is not a problem

But just for you, I slowed down the CPU to the stock 3.06, dell ships them with. Got a 71003d mark 2001...lol

I wo'nt even flame you(although you must be S - - - - D to think I was talking about an AMD CPU, did I say anything remotely close? Since I wrote a program to control the multiplier in that 5150, I can get it running  3400+mhz easily

It could be a bad mobo, ddr, or other hardware.

 Are there any beep codes, after POST, or does the screen go blank, right off

 also did you make sure you made perfect contact with the HS & CPU ?

Did you look to see if there was a jumper to clear the CMOS on the mobo as well??

As far as the 3.06Ghz 533 working in the 5100, most Dell mobo's are only capable or a CPU upgrade 200-400Mhz, so if you had a 2.4-2.6 originally it might work, I think you would be safer with a 2.8

Why on Earth do you keep taking your processor out to apply thermal grease??? Anyway, it sounds like you damaged your processor.
The good news is the 5100 uses a 533MHz FSB desktop processor, and they're not too expensive. You can pick up an OEM 2.4GHz processor for around $100. Now would be a good time to pick up a faster one for a few $'s more, and just consider it an upgrade.

what happened was...the processor came out with the heatsink...glued on by the thermal grease.. so when i tried to twist and pull the processor off, i bent some of the pins along the outter edge of the processor. Iv been trying to keep the processor as cool as possible with arctic silver and am always paranoid about how much to put on, so i tried it a few times. Anyways...where can i get a new processor??? and how do i know which ones i can use??

Any 400 MHz desktop P4 will work, up to the $300 3.0GHz PowerLeap sells.

If you have a desktop with such a CPU, I'd try swapping it (carefully) before you go buy a new CPU - just to make sure you haven't damaged the mainboard.

The CPU is a $100-150 or so replacement (up to 2.6 GHz).  The mainboard, if it's been damaged, is more like a $700 replacement.

What makes you say the 5100 is limted to 400 FSB CPU's? When I bought mine, all the CPU options were 533FSB..??

I was thinking of the 1100.  The 5100 can use 533 CPUs.

 

Simple you said 3400+. That is a AMD CPU designation. Intel uses 3.x GHz to label there CPUs. Now if you had said 3400MHz there wouldn't be this discussion. Probably.
