Inspiron 5100 HELP!
I recently started having problems with my Inspiron 5100 and after taking it to a local repair shop and spending 2 hours trying to talk to a Dell tech,no one has been able to help. This problem first occurred after I downloaded some updates for XP service pack 2.I'm unsure if it was the updates that caused the problem or if it is some other defect. The man at the repair shop said it was not the updates but didn't give an explanation for the problem.
I started getting a blue screen saying,
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates your might need.If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select safe mode.
Technical information:
*** STOP:0x000000ED (0x83799E30,0xc0000006,0x00000000,0x00000000)"
Then I started getting messages like "Windows delayed write failed, may be caused by failure of your computer hardware" and a black screen saying "disk read error occurred" and another blue screen saying it was recovering orphaned files. There is also a strange faint noise that starts just before the computer messes up, it almost sounds like ticking,I had never heard it before the problems started happening.
When the problems first started I performed a system restore ,system reset, and scanned for viruses but nothing has helped. Usually when the black screen would appear telling me to either start Windows normally or in safe mode I would just click start Windows normally and I could usually get it to start up. I've tried safe mode and all the other options but since Saturday I've been completely unable to get windows to start. So if anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it.:smileyhappy:

Hi,
It sounds like a faulty hard drive. Run the Diags and test everything, and also run the HDD tests. The resource CD is bootable and will load the Diags. Depending on your Bios version, you can do an F12 change of boot order from the Dell screen, or change the order in Bios.
