Does your computer seem to boot up fine? what i mean is the power leds and the other leds look normal when you turn the computer on? If so then what probably happened is the backlight in the lcd went out. You would have to replace the lcd screen if that happened.

You'd be surprised to see how much info you can find from www.support.dell.com. I.E. guides for removing/installing parts, drivers, manuals for all specification needs, KB articles, etc. So before you post try searching the site to find the answer you are looking for.

My screen went dark also.  If I power off and leave it plugged in for a week the screen will come back - but then go dark again after a few hours.  I have worked with Dell tech support - they sent me a bios upgrade that worked (for the power adapter) - but the screen went dark again.  Then they recommended that I buy a new power adapter which I did.  No help. 

 

When I plug in an analog monitor, I can see the screen.  When I plug in a digital monitor, I see the Microsoft Windows screen and then it goes dark.  I assume I need to replace some part but I would like to have more information before I take it to a computer repair place.  I have searched support.dell.com and have not found anything that helps.  Thank you.

Today I got the same problem with my Laptop too. When I change display from laptop to external monitor and back to laptop screen, the screen appears normally. But few seconds only. Then again becomes dark. If you observe the screen closely, we can notice the screen is on but couldn't see the windows on it properly.

Please let me know if you find any fix for this.

 

I replaced my LCD inverter and it fixed the problem. If you can see your screen via an external monitor, try running a diagnostic when you boot up (F12) - it should indicate an LCD inverter failure. 

I ran diagnostics twice. Once with Ext.Monitor and once with lcd screen. When I ran with ext. monitor there were no errors. But when I ran with lcd screen, I got a failure at graphics test. While diagnostics run with lcd screen, I got buzz sounds. then I moved to ext. monitor to see the error. It was graphis error. I was asked to continue or retry. I chose to retry. Now the graphics test passed. It seems diagnostics run for current monitor. However LCD Inverter test passed in both cases. I assume there is no problem with inverter in my case.

 

I googled on this issue and found this could also be happen when backlight lamp goes. At this moment I dont have any idea. Probably I need to try changing CCFL Lamp for my LCD screen.

I am currently having the same problem with my E1705. It started last week and then it was fine for a few days. Last night it started again. The computer boots up, however, as soon as the Dell screen comes up it goes dark. I can faintly see the screen but it appears there is no back light. I didn't think it was the back light since we can see the screen briefly before it goes dark. Any help would be appreciated.

I googled (search with model + dark screen) so much on this problem. All the forums and discussions conluded the cause of the problem is either backlight lamp or LCD inverter board. I wanted to try out first replacing inverter board, so I ordered one on ebay.

 

Check these things first

1. Run diagnostics (hit F12 at boot time and select diagnostics option) this would tell you where the test failed.

2. Open your LCD and check the part number of LCD inverter. Use the url http://repair4laptop.org/notebook_lcd_display.html for instructions on how to replace inverter board. It was illustrated very nicely. You don't need to open entire LCD to see the model number.

3.Search ebay for the item number. Most of the LCDs used for dell systems are LG and Samsung. Mine was samsung screen and the LCD inverter for that screen is K02I056.01. Try to find exact model number if possible. otherwise order any other compatible model, it should work.

 

I am waiting for the LCD inverter. Once I got it and replace my old one, I will again update this thread. Hope this helps you in some extent.

I replaced LCD inverter for my Inspiron 8600. But I am still getting dark screen for every 15-20 mins. If I restart it after sometime, I will get screen normal. I have no clue what could be the problem. Is it the problem with LCD inverter or LCD lamp or anything else?

 

 

I am having the same problem, the system is fine for a while, and then it just clicks to a dark screen, I can still see the screen, but only just... and the rest of the system seems to be working fine (I managed to write an email to dell support, just!)... and I don't think its anything to do with the screen as EVERYTIME I start the system the 'dell' sign comes up in full colour resolution. This seems to be a problem which many dell users seem to have, surely dell should have a general cure for such a problem worked out?
