I had the same problem and tried that, but it didn't work - I was only able to install some "Asset Tag" (don't know it's meaning is?) and the BIOS still didn't allow to set a password.
Then I found this posting and tried it again with that undocumented switch "s" mentioned there and it worked now.

There is a possibility to remove an Asset Tag - am I right that it is not possible to remove a Service Tag, once it is installed?

Did you just use the tool again with the switch "/s" followed by the new tag and it didn't take the new service tag because there already was one installed?

That's what my question was about...

If it is blank, you can use the asset.com program to enter it in.

If it says "Field" or "Dell" (or anything that is incorrect) then you'll have to call Dell and have them fix it.

What if you fat finger'd the service tag, can you reenter it.

I have done this and now can not change it. Is there a work around?

Yes, it seems with that Pheionx bios it will not let me change it.

I get a error, telling me to check the format and be sure the setup password is disabled. So I checked the util on a GX150 and you can change it a will.

I appear to be in the same perdicament. I have tried asset.com and svctag.exe but I get an error stating that it cannot get SMBIOS GPNV information. So is there any way to change the Service Tag? I would appreciate any help.

You already have the answer. You have to call Dell and have them send a tech out to set the service tag. Now isn't that simple.

Or you can search the internet for a program that clears the chip the holds the service tag information...something like ee-cp or ee-xp depending on the module notebook? Thats what the tech. used on my system.

I dont think you can find it anywhere out there though.   ;-)
