intermitent sound/speaker problems on i8500
hi - have been encountering occasional randomly occurring problems with the sound on my i8500.
when it happens, from the speakers i can hear the sound if i max all the volume levels but its at a very low level, muffled and distorted. with headphones i can hear nothing.
on the PC the soundcard seems fine. its installed, applications are using it. try everything to get it working - no luck. then a few days later it will work fine.
below is a detailed version of what's happened & what i have tried.
has anyone else had this problem?

using laptop with a mixer for live work & DJing - all worked fine. was even impressed at performance of the built in soundcard.
on one occasion, playing an mp3 through laptop speakers (working fine) - then connected headphone jack to mixer. mixer levels not turned right down, so buzzed when connecting (nothing excessive though). then nothing - no sound at all, even when i disconnected from mixer. laptop speakers no longer working.
checked all volume levels on laptop (all on). check sound card in device manager (ok). rebooted - still not working. reinstalled sound card, still not working.
have dual boot, so booted into other XP setup. soundcard works ok!! rebooted into original XP setup and sound card is now working.
this has happened a few times and the alternate boot seemed to sort it. it does not give me the feeling i have a reliable machine!! then it got worse.
started up. no sound - can hear it v faint & muffled through speakers if all volumes are maxed. nothing through headphones.
try everything to sort it - volumes, drivers, reboots. no joy. spend another hour. give up and resign myself to calling DELL the next day.
next day - ITS WORKING FINE!!! what is going on? it feels like a bad connection between the soundcard and its outputs or something.
i was worried before i bought the machine about the infamous clicking noise - but that’s nothing, i barely notice it.
This however is a whole other deal! i use my laptop for performing, and it now has the potential to stop working at any time!!! reliabilty?!?!?!
anyone else had this? what can i do? will be calling DELL and post what they say.

this problem dissappeared for a long time, but is now back with avengence!!
anyone else experienced / solved it?
