Internet connection issues

My old laptop that I gave to my son all of a sudden will not connect to the internet. It recognizes the router but will not connect to the internet. A new router was put in a while back but I am unsure if that has anything to do with it or not. Help and thanks!

    Stipher,

Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and REGISTERED OWNER, if using XP, run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

What virus program and firewall are you using?

I have added it in below. At the moment it has McAfee on it. However, I was going to remove that and start over with Avast I believe. The firewall is turned off at this time as well.

    Thanks!

    Stipher,

The 169.254 IP Address tells me there is a problem with the router.

Power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer and try to connect.

    What happens?

    Rick,

Thanks, however it is still not working. The wireless is coming as unidentified network. Full signal but still not able to connect to the internet. I have two other laptops in the house that work just fine. The one I'm having trouble with is probably about 6 years old. It seems like it just cannot recognize the new router that was put in a while back.

    Chris,

Just checking to make sure you're not using Mac address filtering in your wireless router, correct?

Start, control panel, device manager, network adapters, double click on Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN Mini-Card, advanced. Look for Antenna Diversity. Change it from Auto to Aux.

Click on power management. Uncheck the box, allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer and try to connect.

If that fails, get your activation key from McAfee. Write it down or print it. If you cannot fin the key, try using Belarc Advisor

I would uninstall McAfee sing the McAfee Removal Tool then restart your computer.

Try to connect. If you connect, there was an issue with McAfee. You should be able to install McAfee and activate it and it should work.
